Google and Microsoft working on webOs
Microsoft interestingly unveiled a bit earlier than Google one of their new project, Gazelle, a new webOs. As for the Google Chrome Os, this is a bit early to tell in what form this will come. Unlike most companies out there Google announce their project when they are in very early stage. But all indications are it will be mostly for netbooks and will be very lightweight.
You can find this official announcement here.

Without re-reading the article, I believe “initially” it will be for netbooks but expand to the desktop/laptops later.
